How do you top one of the most outrageous moments in music history – hologram Tupac? The fact is, you just can’t, but this year Coachella has opted for another blast from the past with three out of the four headlining acts reigning over ’80s and ’90s air waves. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, and the Stone Roses lead the Indio music and arts festival alongside French alt-pop band Phoenix, with a pretty hefty lineup of awesome acts on the bill.
My must-sees: RHCP, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Local Natives, How to Destroy Angels, Grizzly Bear, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, JEFF the Brotherhood – and, if they’re playing at 3 in the morning when you’re feeling weird, Bassnectar. Phoenix plays well live, but will be playing at night as a headliner. My Bonnaroo experience taught me that they were the perfect late-afternoon act on a hot day, letting you wind down (in a nice crowd of people who actually give you space, no less) and mentally prepare yourself for a wild night.
Tickets will go on sale January 29. Check the official Coachella website for a countdown and act quickly – tickets sold out in 40 minutes last year.
